Why, God?

So the law is paralyzed, and justice never goes forth.  For the wicked surround the righteous; so justice goes forth perverted.

“Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded.  For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.

Habakkuk 1:4-5

Habakkuk dared ask God Almighty, “Why?”  Why he called out for justice, and saw none. Why he alone (or so it seemed) saw the sinfulness and iniquity around him. Why there was violence and disregard for the law.

Was God angry at Habakkuk for asking for answers? No, He welcome the fact that Habakkuk turned to Him rather than human understanding for answers. But neither did God answer the why; rather God said, “Look and see the things that I, the Lord, am doing all around you.”

We don’t always see the way God works, nor do we know the reasons behind all He does, but we can see a glimpse into why He seems to delay (at least according to our standards.)  We read:

The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. – 2 Peter 3:9

Not wish that any should perish! Amazing! God desires everyone be saved through repentance and belief in the saving gift of Jesus’ death and resurrection!

Something to think about in this Easter season.
