Sitting here, Christmas morning 2014, in my nightgown, cup of coffee in hand, listening to the sounds of my husband pottering around upstairs. Peace. Joy. Grace. Favor. The gifts of Christmas. God sent his messengers, the angels, to earth more times in this one time period than in any other single period of time in history (thanks, Pastor Scott, for this amazing fact!)
Why did He do that? To announce His gifts to humanity, to the whole world. Peace, joy, favor, grace, but the most important gift: His own Son, Jesus. Jesus, who came as that ‘sweet, little baby boy,” who played in the streets of Nazareth, learned to be a carpenter from his earthly father, had friends, brothers, relatives to celebrate life’s events with. Jesus, who grew to be a man, left his village alone, gathered together a small group of close friends and disciples, taught them things about how to live a life pleasing to God, His Father. Jesus, who was arrested and condemned to die, not because of anything He did, but so that the whole world could be free: Free to receive God’s gifts of peace, joy, grace and favor, free from the burden of sin, and free from the hopelessness of death.
He is still announcing His gifts, nowadays, through us who believe in Him!
Gifts. Free to the recipient, but often costing the giver much; in Jesus’ case, His very life! In God’s case, His only begotten son. Gifts. To me, to you, to the grouchy person you know at work, to the relative no one seems to be able to get along with. To THE WHOLE WORLD! So, how do you get your gift from God, from Jesus? Believe in Jesus: the babe, the man, the resurrected King of Kings! Alleluia!
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[a] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”” John 11: 25-26.
Do not be afraid! Believe, accept the gift, live!
And, as Tiny Tim said, “God bless us, everyone!”
